Sustainable Building Practices in South Africa
Emerging Construction Trends
by Wendy Hlatshwayo on July 25
When researching about emerging construction trends in South Africa and globally, the term that seems to be resonating with many construction companies and consumers is ‘Green or Sustainable Building practices.
An article published by GREEN.ORG defines Green building practices as follows; “design, construction, and operation of buildings that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. This includes energy efficiency, water conservation, and materials selection”
The shift towards sustainable construction practices can be traced back to a pivotal moment in history: United Nations Human Settlements Conference in Vancouver, in 1976, This conference marked a critical juncture as it introduced and popularized the term “Sustainable Development.” This concept emerged from the growing awareness of the declining state of natural resources and environmental quality, alongside the rising global temperatures and the onset of climate change.
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” [Sustainable Development Goals]
GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA
The Green Building Council of South Africa , a non-profit organization working to advance sustainable construction and property practices in South Africa defines green buildings as:
“Green buildings are purposefully designed to benefit both the environment and the people who inhabit them. These structures prioritise energy efficiency, resource conservation, and the use of eco-friendly and sustainable materials. They are also commonly referred to as high-performance buildings because their design pursues excellence in various aspects, such as the building’s economic viability, functionality, longevity, resilience, and occupant comfort.”
These are some of the Green and Sustainable Building Certifications your construction company can aim to acquire.
- LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

- Edge
The impacts of climate change are evident worldwide, with rising temperatures and more frequent natural disasters. It is crucial for every organization to invest in initiatives that promote environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies and practices. While this may require time and effort, the well-being of our children and future generations depends on it.
